Idly surfing, as I often am, I noticed that this search on Google turns up an inordinate number of websites, commentaries, and even a movie bearing some version of the name, “Coffee Chronicles”. Looks like I wasn’t as uniquely witty as I thought I was when I first started writing these commentaries - by hand, mind you, and with pen and paper, even - way back in 2002. Oh, well, such is life.
If anyone has seen the movie, by the way, I’d be very eager to hear what the heck it’s about. If I’m guessing correctly, such a small movie (12 minutes !?) could use some publicity.
I’ve now spent some not-insignificant time moving all of TCC’s content from the old home at Blogger over to this fine new location. I think WordPress looks like it has a lot of promise, and finally fulfills my search for an appropriate content-management system. That said, however, being hosted for free on WordPress.com there’s little of the flexibility present in a custom-installation of WP on my very own server. I have played around with the custom templates, CSS editing, and such, and it’s very, very nice. Time will supply that opportunity, but for the meantime, I’m saving my pennies, looking for a good webhost - or a well-priced static IP package.
For those interested in making the jump to WP, though, I will supply the following suggestions:
- Read the codex and browse the support forums.
- Check out Andy Skelton’s blog for Blogger –> WP importing, especially for a self-hosted install of WP.
- If you’re importing from Blogger to WP.com, however, there’s a nifty importer tool that worked a treat for me. Check out this topic on WP.com, and read it through, noting that it seems to work quite well.
- Sometimes post titles don’t come over the way you expect them to, especially when (as was the case here) your old blog didn’t really have them. Hello, manual editing.
- If you’re not using self-hosted comments, make sure your comments are exportable; I used enetation, finding out only recently that I’d need to pay to obtain a file-dump of old comments. Okay, it’s a support “donation”, but still. Now I’m hand-importing my comments. Bo-ring.
I guess that’s a healthy list, based on a few days’ work. Sure, it’s not perfect around here, but it’s easy as pie to make the switch.
