I’m unreservedly sad to learn about Arthur Clarke’s passing. His literary work, for this sci-fi fan, continues to be an endless source of inspiration. An opportunity to hear him speak (by video) on the occasion of Cassini’s flyby of Iapetus was a singular event, heralded as it was by him in the original book version of 2001: A Space Odyssey (see the “Eye of Iapetus”). I can hope against hope that, at the last minute, some advanced intelligence from the galaxy swooped down and spirited him away. So farewell, Mr. Clarke, and thanks.
